In 2018 Busselton Senior High School was the winner of the VET in School Pathways, at the National Awards in Sydney. This is a reflection of the unique VET model at the school and the positive outcomes for students.
Busselton SHS has a long history of delivering high quality VET programs with very strong links with the local community. All VET programs provide students with the opportunity to achieve a Certificate II qualification and Secondary Graduation. The school is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) School with scope to issue qualifications in a range of industry areas including: Business, Engineering, Sport Coaching. The school also delivers qualifications in Building and Construction and Community Services. The school has access to the Trade Training Centre on site with state of the art facilities for delivery in Engineering, Building and Construction and Hospitality.
VET programs are popular with students and are highly regarded in the community. Students graduate with current, relevant and transferable skills – qualities sought after by employers. Students achieve their Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) in addition to their VET qualification. They will also have completed a minimum of 220 hours of Workplace Learning. This is invaluable in assisting them with future work and career choices. The VET pathway is a cost efficient pathways to further training and/or employment.
Students also have the option of accessing the Certificate IV Pathway to Nursing at TAFE. This supplements their school program in Year 11 and can assist students pursuing further study (including university) or careers in the area.
The ‘hands on’ learning environment and exposure to the workplace really do prepare students for life after school. VET students exit school with both qualifications and experience, facilitating a positive transition to employment, traineeships and apprenticeship or further training.
Students participating in VET programs are required to complete Workplace Learning. This is a SCSA endorsed program that provides students with up to 4 unit equivalents towards their WACE/WASSA. This highly successful program allows students to experience a number of workplaces, carefully selected by staff after consultation with students. This experience is invaluable with many students gaining employment or apprenticeships as a direct result of their performance in the workplace.
